EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
